Salmon was a long shot so we decided to try for local halibut. Went squishing for our live squid and mackerel then headed to the halibut grounds. Slow start but then things picked up pretty good! In addition to hooking a bat ray and a shark, hooked into eight halibut. Had to return two hali’s to grow and a few times we came up with ripped up bait. Wound up taking four nice halibut home.

July 30
After making bait (jigging up squid and mackerel) we headed a ways up the coast. Dropped in our live squid and wham! The party started. The kids did real good with vermillion (red pacific snapper) to eight pounds, lingcod and big blues. But… Dad/Uncle had to school them with his 15 pound lingcod. Great day with limits of snapper and we only kept four lingcod.
July 29
Was supposed to go for salmon but with the slow bite we opted for Jurassic Park (long range) instead. Lots of action and lots of fun. Whales, dolphin, a great white shark and big fish including lingcod, copper, red, canary, olive, and blue pacific snapper. Got our first kelp greenling of the season too. Limits of snapper for all plus crew limit.
July 28
Another awesome day at Jurassic Park. Jigged up our live bait then headed to the deep reef and started loading the boat with lingcod, rockcod and petrale sole. Even got a little whale and dolphin show.
July 19 thru July 27
It’s time for the MEGA-BITE crew to take our vacation! Tom stayed put, Kai fished commercial and Max went on surfing trips. We’ll be back on the 28th. July is already booked. August has a lot of openings yet to be filled. 7/27 update: Bluefin in the 120 pound range are being hooked and sometimes landed.
July 18
Great trip with some of my favorites, Kai and Jaden. These two kids smacked the rockcod and lingcod good today. Brother Meleke was in charge of red snapper with his biggest going six pounds. Jaden landed a 33.25 inch lingcod. Holly and Ron (mom & dad) also contributed their fair share.
July 17
Our group from 105 degree Sacramento came to fish in 65 degree temps on flat calm seas. Combined with lots of fish, made their trip a very enjoyable experience.
July 16
Awesome day on the bay today with zero wind and flat calm seas. Jigged up live squid then went to town for limits of lingcod and 100 pounds of olive and red pacific snapper up to nine pounds!
July 15 Afternoon trip
Ran back out to the fishing grounds where we caught this morning and the fish were waiting for us! Doubles were common and the fish were big! Big blues, big olives, canary and red pacific snapper to four pounds. Lot’s of fun and plenty of fish. Nice dolphin show too. Flat as a pancake water with no wind.

July 13 Morning trip
Headed out to the local rockcod grounds and whacked the rockcod big time! Loaded up the fish box with seven limits of olive, blue, brown, canary, and red pacific snapper to five pounds.
July 12
Jurassic today but had to stay close to shore (winds) so we went squishing (squid fishing) first then halibut fishing then off to get limits of snapper. Brought home a ton of squid, two very nice halibut and limits of pacific snapper including reds to five pounds. Awesome day!
July 11
Great group and great fishing with limits of olive, blue, canary, brown, and red pacific snapper.
July 10
Off the hook wild fishing today. Wind coming in early so opted for local potluck instead of salmon and it was GREAT! Big fish for limits for all plus crew including 19 red pacific snapper to seven pounds. Live and fresh dead squid (that our group jigged up) was the ticket.
July 9
Trolled for salmon but soon realized the bite was going to be slow. Instead of dragging bait around for hours we opted for snapper and halibut. Good thing we did. Had the four kids jig up live squid then got our seven limits of rockfish (snapper) and a nice halibut.
July 8
Great day for our local potluck trip. Water had a little bump and there was zero wind. After an hour of searching finally found some willing fish and it was game on for the rest of the morning. Limits for all of olive, blue, canary, and red pacific snapper. Ceviche tonight!
July 5
High winds forced us to change course and fish locally in Santa Cruz. Glad we did because the fishing was outstanding! We caught well over 120 fish but only kept the best for eight limits of olive, blue, canary, brown and red pacific snapper.
July 4
Awesome day with awesome folks today. It’s been six years since Andrew was on the boat and now that he’s 16 you can see he can handle a Jurassic Park trip without question. Drew hooked into a lot of fish today and the boat went in with lingcod and six limits of some high quality snapper. GREAT 4TH OF JULY!
July 3
Another try at salmon today. Fished with about a hundred other boats in close quarters. Only saw one net flying and it wasn’t ours.
July 2
With the salmon still being hard to find we opted for local potluck today and we did good! Limits of big yellowtail, blue, canary, and red pacific snapper to six pounds for all plus crew.
June 30
Went for salmon today and we traveled all over and we caught salmon! One in the box and may have missed a couple. Things are looking up for salmon fishing.
June 29
South swell still in town so headed up the coast for Jurassic Park fishing. Tried for squid but none would bite. Fortunately we still had leftover fresh dead squid from a couple days ago and it paid off. We got into some lingcod and limits of rockfish.
June 27 – Afternoon trip
Afternoon local potluck trip and WOW! Seas were flat as a pancake and the fishing was crazy good. Still using our squid form the morning catch for bait and the fish loved it! Limits for all plus crew limits of nice blue, olive, canary, brown, starry and red pacific snapper. Awesome day.
June 27 – Morning trip
Local potluck trip with live squid! Ran up the coast and made bait. Ran to some honey holes and wham! The rockfishing was on fire! Limits plus including ten red pacific snapper to five pounds. Great morning.
June 26
What a great day for our Jurassic Park trip. Water was flat and the fish were biting! Jigged up our live squid for bait then headed for some lingcod action. As soon as we dropped in it was game on. All rods were hooked up at one time and two gaffs flying. Got four lingcod limits and tossed back a few to grow even lost a couple monsters at the boat. Then moved on to rockfish and again we nailed it! 13 red pacific snapper and a mix of coppers, blues, blacks, olives, canary pacific snapper for limits plus crew fish. The kids had a blast making bait too.
June 22
Jurassic today and after getting our live bait went to the deep reef for some lingcod action. First drop and we hit lingcod. Unfortunately that was the only drop that produced lingcod. Ended up getting too many boccaccio (salmon grouper) so headed closer to shore for pacific snapper.
June 21
Another banner day and flat calm seas in the morning for our Jurassic Park trip. Got to our fishing grounds and as soon as we dropped in we started hauling in the lingcod. Finished with limits for all plus crew fish then off to the rockfish grounds. Rockfish’ing was slow but the four+ limits of big lingcod to 36 inches was well worth the extra effort.
June 20
Great day on the water as we ventured out to Jurassic Park. Early lingcod limits and lost a few too. Then off to the rockfish grounds for the remainder of the day.
June 19
Beautiful day for a local potluck trip. 11 and 12 year-olds were on top of their game! Pierson landed at least 20 rockfish and brother Hudson brought in another half dozen. Dad brought in his share Holly was their coach (and she caught fish). Way to go gang! Limits of olive, blue, brown, canary and red pacific snapper.
