Our Jurassic Park trips are long-range cod fishing adventures! Depending on current regulations, we’ll either head up the coast (nearshore) or fish out in the deep. When we fish nearshore we can also encounter sanddabs, shark, and halibut. On our deep reef trips, you’ll often encounter sanddabs, petrale sole, and blackcod in addition to rockfish and lingcod.
We may fish as deep as 450 feet, traveling anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to reach the grounds. As the name suggests, we go farther, and the fish can get big!
We now have two different Jurassic Park trips. One trip focuses the start of the trip on lingcod and the other trip is to focus first on rockcod and petrale sole. Reason is we use different techiques for both types of trips. Sometimes we will have to move to an area that has predominately lingcod or visa versa.
Jurassic Park Trip: Version A (The “Lingzilla” Hunt)
This trip is designed for anglers who want to target the fierce, toothy Lingcod. We focus our efforts on high-relief rocky structures and deep-water reefs where these “Lingosaurus” ambush their prey.
The Technique: We primarily use heavy vertical jigging and live or whole dead baiting. Expect to work with larger lures like pipe jigs, diamond jigs, or oversized curly tail grubs, whole squid to entice an aggressive strike. Best For: Anglers looking for a hard-fighting “trophy” fish and high-action strikes.
Jurassic Park Trip: Version B (The Gourmet Bottomfish Combo)
This version prioritizes variety and high-quality table fare, focusing first on Rockcod and Petrale Sole. We spend more time over “live bottoms” and transition zones where these species are most active. Primary Targets: Assorted Rockfish (Vermilion, Canary, Copper) and Petrale Sole.
The Technique: We use lighter, high-sensitivity setups like dropper loops and shrimp flies tipped with squid strips. This approach is more tactical, ensuring we get our baits down precisely to where the schools are holding. Best For: Those who want a busy day with plenty of bites and the best-tasting fillets to take home. We fish with live bait (when available), metal jigs, or shrimp fly/hoochie rigs tipped with generous strips of squid. Our crew is proud to hold the IGFA world record for the largest olive rockfish (Pacific snapper/rockcod)—caught right on one of these trips.
This trip can be challenging but rewarding. We’ve had anglers from age eight to eighty do great out here! To help reduce tangles when fishing deep, we limit to four anglers on the rods at a time. For those who want an easier way to bring fish up from the depths, we offer electric rod & reel combos for rent ($75 each). In shallower waters, we can fish with six lines down at once.
A Jurassic Park trip is truly a bucket-list experience—a day you’ll be talking about for years.
